Big Island Events: April 2023
April showers might bring May flowers on the Mainland. But here in Hawaii, April offers sunshine and daytime temperatures in the high 70s. And with water temperatures resting around 77 F, there’s no reason not to welcome Spring with a swim or snorkel.
When you need a break from wave-chasing and sunbathing, check out these events happening this month on the Big Island.
Hawaii Mushroom Festival
Starseed Ranch is hosting the second-annual Hawai’i Mushroom Festival on their 26-acre off-grid permaculture estate. This two-day event will feature fungi fun for the whole family.
Budding foragers can take a wild mushroom identification walk. And folks who like to explore the inner landscapes of the mind can tune into a talk on Psilocybin species. A celebration of mycology and community, this festival is a perfect opportunity to gain some niche and tasty hands-on education.
While you’re visiting the north shore, why not schedule a tour of this new luxury listing in Honokaa? This property features a fully equipped outdoor kitchen perfect for grilling up some meaty portabella caps. Or if you’re feeling fancy, master your wild mushroom risotto in the home’s state-of-the-art main kitchen (complete with a granite waterfall island).
When: April 15th - 16th
Where: Starseed Ranch (52-4700 Akoni Pule Highway Kapaau, HI)

Arts & Crafts Festival
This year marks the 30th celebration of the Hawaii, Arts, Crafts, and Food Festival. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or thinking about buying a home on the Big Island, this event is a great introduction to Hawaii’s diverse culture and heritage.
The festival is part of the weeklong Merrie Monarch Festival which celebrates and showcases the Hawaiian art of hula. For those of us based closer to Kona, it’s a perfect excuse to visit the other side of the island. Notorious for being the “wet side” of the island, the east coast features lush vegetation and some amazing waterfalls.
When: April 13th - 15th
Where: Nani Mau Gardens (421 Makalika Street Hilo, HI)

Big Island Chocolate Festival
Kona coffee gets a lot of well-deserved love. But did you know that the Big Island is also home to several cacao farms?
This month, the Kona Cacao Association is presenting its 10th annual Big Island Chocolate Festival. This three-day event will feature competitions, culinary demos, and plenty of opportunities to sample some of the Big Island’s best chocolates.
When: April 27th - 29th
Where: Waikoloa Beach Resort
