Big Island Barks: a Guide for Dog Lovers
All the gorgeous weather and stunning seaside vistas in the world can’t replace man’s best friend. In Hawaii, you can have it all. If you’re thinking about bringing your barkiest bud to the Big Island, check out my guide for dog lovers.
Traveling With Dogs From the Mainland
The combination of planes and pets can be a hassle. But don’t let your furry friends tether you to the Mainland. Bring them along!
Maybe you’ve heard horror stories about a six-month quarantine. Fortunately, you can avoid this quarantine by applying for a Direct Airport Release (DAR).
Getting a DAR can take a bit of time. So it’s worth starting the application process as soon as you begin planning your next extended visit – or move! – to Hawaii. Visit the State of Hawaii’s Animal Industry Division for more information and a complete checklist of steps.
This might sound like a lot of four-legged legwork, but it’s worth it. Hawaii is the only state in the US completely free from rabies.
Dog-Friendly Beaches
If water gets your pup’s tail a wagging, the Dog Beach at Honokohau Harbor is the place to be.
Located on the shore of Kona (73-4786 Kanalani St.), this beach is the island’s only sandy spot where dogs can roam off-lead. After a short scramble over lava rocks, you’ll reach a white sand beach. The ocean is reasonably shallow here. So whether your dog prefers swimming or just splashing, you won’t have to worry about rough waters.
For more information on walking your dog along the shore, check out the Hawaiian Humane Society’s list of dog-friendly beaches across the Big Island.
Unless otherwise indicated, dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. And the usual dog-owner etiquette applies: clean up after your pooch.
Vets, Shops, & More
Downtown Kona features several veterinary practices that will ensure your dog stays healthy and happy. There’s a Petco and Walmart to meet your basic pet food and supply needs.
But you can also keep it local by shopping at Rock Star Pet Supplies & Gifts. Owned by a mother-daughter duo, this shop offers boarding as well as a wide selection of goods for the good boy in your life. They even sell chews, treats, and grooming supplies made in Hawaii!
And when the seaside air turns your poodle into a puffball, head over to Doggy Detail. They offer bathing and styling for dogs of all sizes. If you’re living in luxury, shouldn’t your furriest family member enjoy such pampering as a blueberry facial and a paw pad treatment?
It’d be a shame to let all that grooming go to waste. Once your pup has been pampered, take them out on the town to be properly admired. Huggo’s on the Rocks allows dogs in their extensive outdoor seating area. BringFido identifies 25 eateries that welcome dogs at their outdoor tables.
