Spa Treatment for the Primary Bathroom
When you’re daydreaming about your future high-end home, you probably don’t spend much time thinking about the bathrooms. It can be easy to overlook bathrooms as merely functional. But to truly achieve a luxury lifestyle, you need to embrace bathrooms as wellness spaces. Check out my tips for giving the primary bathroom a bit of spa treatment.
Features First
Yes, designing bathrooms can and should be about more than functionality. But considering the main features (i.e. the bathtub or shower) can be a good place to start your design dreams.
A freestanding bathtub is the centerpiece of many high-end bathrooms. But be more specific. Bathtub design is infinite and can guide the aesthetic and architecture of the rest of the room.
Do you want the grandeur and traditionalism of a clawfoot? Or do you want to add a bit of flair with something more modern? Or, to really embrace spa life, you could even install a sunken tub.
Alternatively, you could also install a showstopping shower. Paying attention to fixtures will help you create an aesthetic through the shower. The shower head, plumbing, basin, and doors (or lack thereof) are all opportunities to transform your space.
Sit Down and Stay Awhile
The key to creating a spa-like space is a bathroom design that encourages you to linger.
One easy way to evoke a leisurely mindset is to add seating. Maybe it sounds bizarre to add a settee to a bathroom. But think about it: you need somewhere to sit while you paint your toenails. And an understated bench in the shower can go a long way.
Fabric adds softness to a bathroom that makes the space more welcoming. (Many companies offer performance textiles specifically designed to resist water damage.) Unless you’re going for a wet room aesthetic, your bathroom probably has a bathmat. Why not upgrade it for something more regal and expansive?
Cultivate a Color Concept
You can read up on interior design trends all you want. When it comes to color, everyone has some brand of armchair psychology to offer.
Some designers recommend warm earth tones, others opt for all-black opulence, and there are still designers who insist an all-white bathroom can generate tranquility rather than hospital vibes.
What color you should paint your bathroom comes down to personal taste. The important thing is intentionality. Develop a concept before you begin sourcing accessories, fixtures, towels, etc.
Don’t Forget the Details
For increased peace, you will want to limit toiletry clutter (shoutout to hidden storage features!). But that doesn’t mean the design needs to be minimalistic.
Lighting features can add visual accent and influence the room’s mood. And if your bathroom is blessed with natural lights, many houseplants will love to soak up the shower steam.
And absolutely do not skimp when purchasing towels.
Shower Like a Local
Outdoor showers are one of the joys available to high-end homes in Hawaii. But we also know how to elevate indoor bathroom routines to the pinnacle of personal care.
