Big Island Events: June 2023
It’s no secret: Hawaii is an ever-popular tourist destination. But one of the things I love about the Big Island is that it caters to locals as well as tourists, as demonstrated through frequent events to gather the community. Whether your idea of a good time is partying in the sun, appreciating local culture, or tuning your guitar, Hawaii’s got you covered this June. Here are some Big Island events you won’t want to miss.
Hawaii Songwriting Festival
Held at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, the Hawaii Songwriting Festival is three days of music, learning, and meeting other songwriters. Since 2002, this event has attracted songwriters from across the world at all levels of experience. More of a music appreciator than practitioner? No worries. Come to the concert on Saturday night for live performances from the conference’s songwriting finalists as well as mainland guests and local favorites.
If you’re staying in Kona, you will need to drive north a little bit to get to this event. But hey, it’s on the way if you want to view this private resort-style property in Honokaa.
When: June 8th - 10th
Where: 62-100 Kaunaʻoa Drive Waimea, HI 96743

Hawaii Kuauli Pacific & Asia Cultural Festival
The Hawaii Kuauli Pacific & Asia Cultural Festival celebrates all that’s great about being a melting pot: food, fashion, dance, music, and community. You’ll definitely want to check out the
Le Kaua Ailao Fireknife Competition (or the Taste of Pacific & Asia culinary experience). Held at King Kamehamehaʻs Kona Beach Resort in downtown Kona, the event is an excellent way for visitors to learn about the state’s rich cultural heritage.
When: June 9th (4:30 pm - 9:00 pm)
Where: 75-5660 Palani Road, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740

Kamehameha Day
Kamehameha Day is an official state holiday that marks the eponymous king’s unification of the Hawaiian islands in 1810. You’ll find festivities across the archipelago. In Kona, we’re celebrating with a parade, followed by a music and arts festival in Historic Kailua Village. The highlight of the parade will no doubt be the flower-adorned pa‘u riders representing the eight islands.
When: June 10th
Where: Historic Kailua Village
More Info: Kona Parade
Kona Pride Snorkel Cruise
On the mainland, June is Pride Month. The Big Island dances to its own drum, officially celebrating in September. If you find yourself in Kona this June, you can still celebrate with the LGBTQ community – by snorkeling. The Kona Style catamaran will tour you along the Kona Coast. It’s sure to be an afternoon filled with sunshine and snorkeling. Or stay onboard to enjoy the cash bar and boogie with your favorite shipmates.
When: June 17th (1:00 - 5:00 pm)
Where: Kaahumanu Pl, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740

Live Like a Local
Maybe you’re planning your trip around a specific event or maybe your dates just happen to overlap with one of Kona’s various festivities. Either way, contact me to discuss how you can ditch the hotel and start living like a local.
Aloha, and welcome to Hawaii.
