Keep Cool Like a Kona Local

Happy July! I heard it’s hot on the Mainland. With temperatures soaring, don’t you dream of a breezy Hawaiian escape?

Okay, okay. Yes, it can get hot on the Big Island too.

But unlike the sweltering streets of the Mainland, Kona offers many ways to not only endure but thrive during higher temperatures. Check out some of my top tips to keep cool like a Kona local.

Hit the Beach

What better way to cool off than to jump in the ocean?

Whether you prefer white sand or black sand, life’s a beach in Kona. (If you’re up for a little drive south, you can visit a rare green sand beach at Papakōlea.)

Hanging out in downtown Kona and need a break from the shopping? Take a dip at  Kamakahonu Beach. Its sheltered waters make it a great place to take the kids. But it’s also a popular place to snorkel, dive, and kayak.

Local tip: rent out gear at the Kona Boys beach shack.

Grab a Cone

Want a tasty treat to beat the heat? Check out Gypsea Gelato in Coconut Grove Marketplace.

Sandra and Tim Heaton founded this shop after spending years traveling the world on commercial fishing and diving boats. They’ve called Kona home since 2014, and we are grateful for their presence.

Gypsea Gelato uses locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. (Dragonfruit White Pineapple Sorbet? Yes, please!) Their menu elevates the ice cream experience, featuring flavors that blend rosewater, saffron, and pistachio. Don’t worry, they also have classic chocolate.

Need a pick-me-up? Grab a 100% Kona Cold Brew while you’re here.

Head to Higher Elevation

Heat rises, so maybe it sounds counterintuitive to stay cool by heading to higher elevation. But I’m not talking about hanging out on the third floor.

I’m talking about parasailing. Sending you 1200 feet into the air, UFO Parasail gives you a bird’s-eye view of the Big Island. Between the sea spray and the fresh air, this adventure will refresh and inspire you.

If you prefer a milder adventure, UFO Parasail also offers private boating tours. Take an exclusive ride on a premium speed boat to glimpse spinner dolphins and humpback whales.

Enjoy a Drink

At the end of a hot day, nothing’s better than an ice cold drink with friends. Why not make it an oceanfront drink at Huggo’s On the Rocks? This local legend blends their own syrups and infused liquors, serving up exceptional craft cocktails.

The drink menu boasts that their 50 Year Mai Tai is the best in the islands. But don’t take my word for it. Sip for yourself!

Local tip: catch happy hour from 3pm to 5pm daily.
