Yes, the views from your lanai are lovely, but Hawaii isn’t just about the beautiful scenery and relaxation! The Big Island is brimming with fun things to do and events to take part in. Go out into the community and experience the spirit of lōkahi (togetherness, harmony and unity). Here are the events to look forward to in March.
Great Waikoloa Ukulele Festival – March 7
Island music is always so soothing and relaxing. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could play it for yourself? Well, look no farther. On March 7th, some of the greatest ukulele players on the Big Island will come together in the Queens’ Marketplace in the Waikoloa Village to teach and perform at the 20th Annual Great Waikoloa Ukulele Festival.
World-renown ukulele master Roy Saukuma will be teaching workshops dedicated to beginners and intermediate players, followed by performances by Saukuma and his fellow masters. The event is FREE and will last all day from 10am until 6pm.
Haku Lei Workshop – March 8
Living in Hawaii means people are always coming to visit. Mainlanders just can’t seem to get enough of the tropical Big Island sunshine – and who can blame them!? When your friends and family come over from the mainland, say aloha the Hawaiian way by putting a homemade lei around their neck.
On March 8th, lei maker Keola will be hosting a workshop at the Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area from 10:30 to 1pm to teach you how to make your own Hawaiian leis. All materials will be provided along with some light refreshments. If interested, be sure to RSVP by March 6th at the latest.
Kona Brewer’s Festival – March 14
If you’re a lover of craft beer – and who isn’t? – don’t miss the Kona Brewer’s Festival on March 14th at King Kamehmeha’s Kona Beach Hotel in Kailua Kona Village from 3-7pm. Over 35 breweries from Hawaii and the mainland will be at the festival to share their creations.
In addition to the delicious craft beer, there will also be a homebrewing competition, the Run for Hops 5k, live music, food vendors and the ever-popular Trash Fashion Show. All proceeds go towards helping several of the Island’s non-profit organizations dedicated to making Hawaii a better, more beautiful place.
Irish Fest at Shops at Mauna Lani – March 21
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the Hawaiian way at Irish Fest at the Shops at Mauna Lani. There will be kids’ activities, games, food and drink along with live Irish music from The Kiltlifters and dancing from Hawaii Irish Dance. Put on some green and come celebrate with the whole family.
Green Walk – March 23
Green walk, forest therapy or forest bathing. Whatever you call it, it’s one great way to reconnect with nature and promote inner wellness. On March 23rd, head over to the Sadie Seymour Botanical Gardens and the Kona Educational Center for a two-hour, guided walk through the gardens, led by Hawaii’s first certified forest therapy guide Phyllis Look.
During the walk, there will be ample time to sit and relax surrounded by the serenity of the trees and to reform your connection with nature. The Green Walk is FREE, and you can register online.
